Single-Electron Detection and Spectroscopy via Relativistic Cyclotron Radiation.

چکیده
It has been understood since 1897 that accelerating charges must emit electromagnetic radiation. Although first derived in 1904, cyclotron radiation from a single electron orbiting in a magnetic field has never been observed directly. We demonstrate single-electron detection in a novel radio-frequency spectrometer. The relativistic shift in the cyclotron frequency permits a precise electron energy measurement. Precise beta electron spectroscopy from gaseous radiation sources is a key technique in modern efforts to measure the neutrino mass via the tritium decay end point, and this work demonstrates a fundamentally new approach to precision beta spectroscopy for future neutrino mass experiments.

Nonthermal Electron Bernstein Emission in Nstx-like Discharges
In overdense plasma for which the plasma frequency exceeds the cyclotron frequency, X-mode, nearperpendicular cyclotron emission does not propagate to the outboard plasma edge. However, under these conditions it remains possible for electron Bernstein waves (EBWs) to transmit emitted radiation from central plasma to the plasma exterior via a mode conversion to electromagnetic waves near the pla...

متن کاملAnalysis of the Cyclotron Radiation from Relativistic Electrons Interacting with a Radio-frequency Electromagnetic Wave
The emission of electromagnetic radiation from charged particles spiraling around magnetic fields is an important effect in astrophysical and laboratory plasmas. In theoretical modeling, issues still not fully resolved are, among others, the inclusion of the recoil force on the relativistic electron motion and the detailed computation of the radiation power spectrum. In this paper, the cyclotro...
متن کاملNumerical Calculations for Relativistic Electron Cyclotron Damping with an Arbitrary Distribution Function at Arbitrary Harmonics
The relativistic expressions for the anti-hermitian (damping) parts of the dielectric tensor elements can be expressed as a single integral over the parallel momentum variable (see Eq.(1) below). A computer program has been written for the calculation of this single integral [1]. The numerical results are tested for a relativistic Maxwellian distribution and agree with analytical expressions de...

Design and experimental results are presented from two high power microwave generation experiments utilizing a high repetition rate induction linac generated electron beam. A relativistic klystron has generated more than 100 MW microwave pulses in X-band for 50 ns without pulse shortening or breakdown. Design studies for the first cyclotron autoresonance maser (CARM) amplifier using an inductio...
